Working together the Outreach committee helps volunteers find the organization that best suits their gifts.

The parish has established two of Salem's more successful programs: Helping Hands and the Walton House (scheduled to move to the Salem Hospital Campus). Each began as parish outreach and are now independent non-profit organizations serving the Salem Community.

An opportunity for the parish

Walton Hospitality House will move to hospital grounds in June and the church is challenged to use the house adjacent to the parking lot to provide service to the community. Please write to us with your suggestions for a new outreach program in this space.

Outreach Opportunities

Parishioner groups participate in these programs as well as many others. Contact us if you would like to join a group or need help in finding the organization best suited to your gifts.

Upcoming Volunteer Events

Kairos Kitchen Lunch: Continuing our tradition of helping to feed people who are struggling or homeless, St. Paul's will be providing meals at St. Mark's Lutheran church through the Kairos Kitchen program.

  • Sunday, August 27
  • Sunday, December 3

On these Sundays members from our parish will set up, cook, serve, and clean up a lunch for 70-90 people at St. Mark's on Marion St. in Salem. Set up starts at 12:30 pm with the meal being served at 2:00 pm and clean up usually completed around 3:45 pm. Just a few hours of your time can mean a world of difference in the life of another. If interested in volunteering along with our youth groups, please let me know at or ph/text: 503-393-6175.

Organizations We Volunteer With

Helping Hands
Helping Hands was originally organized by June Hughes  and other women of St. Paul's in 1967. Today, parishioners from St. Paul's are joined by volunteers from several other churches. These individuals are all committed to the work they do in serving hundreds of people each month, providing clothes, layettes, bedding and small items such as dishes and pots & pans to the needy. Everything used is donated and is provided to those in need at no charge. It is located at 1755 13th Street SE.

Interfaith Hospitality
St. Paul’s is part of a dedicated team of people across 18 hosting congregations, 17 supporting congregations and the full-time staff caseworkers and coordinators at the not-for-profit Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network. The churches and their supporting congregations provide an evening and a morning meal for homeless families with children in our community, while professional full-time staff at the not-for-profit’s offices provide intensive casework and assistance in obtaining affordable housing, employment, or other services. Working with the support of congregations, Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network keeps families together in a time of crisis by assisting families during temporary periods of homelessness, encouraging them to create an achievable vision and develop a strong foundation for self-sufficiency. Learn more about this network here -

A minimum of 42 parishioner-volunteers are required to make each hosting week run smoothly. Groups are welcome and encouraged. Volunteer job descriptions can be found here. You can find Michelle in the Narthex the three weeks prior to each hosting opportunity to sign up.

2017 IHN Host Weeks:
  • Sunday, August 6 - Saturday, August 12 (and Sunday am)
  • Sunday, November 19 - Saturday, Nov. 25 (and Sunday am) - THANKSGIVING WEEK

Kairos Soup Kitchen
The Kairos Soup Kitchen takes place at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem every Sunday.  This event is hosted by Salem area churches and volunteers who participate in the program.  Homeless people (usually 50 - 70 guests) are served at the event.

Simonka House
Simonka House provides emergency services, such as nourishing meals, warm safe shelter, a hot shower, clean clothing and personal care items are just the first step in sharing Christ’s love and providing for those in need.

Walton Guest House
Walton Guest House provides a "home away from home" in a caring atmosphere for those who are from out of town and have relatives or friends in Salem Hospital, and who might otherwise be unable to obtain lodging at a time of personal crisis. The Salem Hospital Social Services Department coordinates eligibility and admissions. Read More>>
